Living with a mini split in Petersburg

Mountain town, valley humidity

Petersburg sits on the South Branch of the Potomac with the mountains close on every side. Summers in the valley can be humid, and winters bring real cold, so a heat pump here earns its keep almost year round.

In heating season, a mini split’s outdoor unit runs defrost cycles to shed frost from its coil. That meltwater has to drain away cleanly. When it can’t, ice builds up under and around the unit. We check the mounting, clearance and drainage under the outdoor unit along with the usual coil, filter and electrical work, because that is often where Petersburg-area winter problems start.

What to watch for in Petersburg

  • Ice building up under or on the outdoor unit in January
  • Indoor heads that blow cool air in heat mode for longer than usual
  • Blinking lights or error codes after a power flicker
  • Weak airflow from a head whose filter hasn’t been rinsed in months

Protection for Petersburg homes

Power flickers are part of mountain life. A voltage monitor on each outdoor unit helps protect the inverter board when the power comes back rough.

Tier 1 is $22.99/month or $279/year, Tier 2 (Full Labor Warranty) is $49/month and Tier 3 (Lifetime Warranty) is $99/month. Each plan is priced per service address, plus WV sales tax.
