Living with a mini split in Franklin

High country, long winters

Pendleton County is some of the highest ground in West Virginia, home to Spruce Knob, the highest point in the state. Even in town, Franklin sees a longer and colder heating season than the valleys to the north, and mini splits here are often the main heat source.

Cold-climate heat pumps can handle that, but they depend on clean coils, a clear path for defrost meltwater and good airflow at every indoor head. A dirty filter costs you a little comfort in May. In February it can mean a head that struggles to keep the room warm. Before winter is the best time to book.

What to watch for in Franklin

  • Long defrost cycles or steam rising from the outdoor unit more often than usual
  • Ice sheeting on the ground or pad under the outdoor unit
  • Rooms farthest from the head staying cold on the coldest nights
  • Error codes after a winter power outage
